Overview / Job Description

Virtustant is seeking a highly skilled Controller to support a managed accounting and fractional CFO practice serving growth-stage and mid-market businesses. This fully remote role is responsible for leading accounting operations across a portfolio of managed accounting clients while also overseeing the firm’s internal accounting functions.

The ideal candidate is a technically strong accounting professional with deep expertise in QuickBooks Online, U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and multi-entity accounting. The role requires proactive leadership, strong systems thinking, and the ability to deliver accurate, audit-ready financial statements while leveraging AI-powered accounting tools to improve efficiency.

Responsibilities

Accounting Operations

• Lead month-end close processes for a portfolio of managed accounting clients
• Review and approve financial statements, reconciliations, and close packages
• Deliver accurate, audit-ready financial reports on schedule
• Monitor accounting records for anomalies, misclassifications, and internal control gaps
• Escalate significant accounting issues with documented findings

Financial Management

• Manage client chart of accounts, reconciliation schedules, AP/AR workflows, and close calendars
• Oversee accounting across multiple industries and entity structures
• Manage the firm’s general ledger
• Perform month-end and year-end close activities
• Prepare variance analyses and financial reporting narratives for leadership

Client Onboarding

• Support onboarding of new managed accounting clients
• Configure accounting systems and perform data migrations
• Design chart of accounts
• Complete opening balance reconciliations

Payroll & Compliance

• Manage semi-monthly payroll processing
• Coordinate domestic and international contractor payments using platforms such as Wise and Deel
• Work with external CPA firms on federal, state, and local tax compliance, filings, and planning

Process Improvement & Automation

• Implement AI automation tools and QuickBooks integrations to improve accounting efficiency
• Improve accounting workflows and financial reporting processes
• Strengthen internal controls over financial reporting

Requirements

Experience

• 5–8 years of accounting experience
• Minimum 2 years in a Controller or Senior Accounting Manager role
• Experience managing multi-entity and multi-industry accounting environments
• Strong experience with month-end close and financial reporting

Skills & Competencies

• CPA or internationally recognized equivalent certification (e.g., ACCA, CPA Australia)
• Expert-level proficiency with QuickBooks Online
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and accrual-based accounting
• Strong financial reporting and reconciliation skills
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong systems-thinking mindset

Preferred Experience

• Experience in fractional accounting, outsourced accounting, or CFO advisory firms
• Experience with AI accounting tools and QuickBooks integrations (Fathom, Syft, Dext, Vic.ai)
• Cross-industry accounting experience (e-commerce, professional services, real estate, nonprofit, manufacturing)
• Experience designing or improving internal financial controls
