Overview / Job Description

Gramian Consultancy is recruiting a Python Backend Engineer (AI Agents & SaaS Integrations) to support a client developing advanced AI systems. This contract role focuses on building realistic backend environments, SaaS integrations, and evaluation datasets used to train and assess autonomous AI agents.

Depending on the assigned project, the engineer will develop backend applications, APIs, and SaaS connectors or create complex AI evaluation tasks that simulate real-world software workflows. The role requires strong backend engineering expertise, hands-on experience with Python and Docker, and proficiency using AI coding tools such as Claude Code.

Responsibilities

Backend Development

• Build Python backend applications that replicate the functionality of existing SaaS platforms
• Develop REST APIs, microservices, and backend services
• Design and implement complete backend workflows
• Build new SaaS integrations and maintain existing connectors

Integration & Testing

• Perform backend testing and integration validation
• Verify that SaaS connectors accurately reproduce system behavior
• Ensure backend applications meet functionality and quality standards
• Maintain reliable and scalable backend solutions

AI Task Development & Evaluation

• Analyze software workflows and datasets to create realistic AI evaluation tasks
• Design long-horizon software engineering tasks based on real-world scenarios
• Conduct structured quality assurance on AI-generated outputs
• Develop evaluation rubrics for correct, partially correct, and insufficient task outcomes

AI-Assisted Development

• Utilize Claude Code and other AI coding assistants throughout development
• Leverage AI tools to improve software development, testing, and validation workflows
• Apply AI-assisted engineering best practices across assigned projects

Requirements

Experience

• Minimum 3 years of professional software engineering experience
• Experience developing backend applications with Python
• Experience building REST APIs and microservices
• Experience with backend frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django
• Hands-on experience with Docker and Git
• Experience using AI coding assistants in daily software development
• Strong experience with Claude or Claude Code

• Strong backend architecture and API development knowledge
• Knowledge of SaaS integrations and backend workflows
• Proficiency with Docker and software containerization
• Strong understanding of software testing and quality assurance
• Knowledge of version control and software delivery pipelines

• Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality technical solutions
• Strong attention to code quality and maintainability

Candidate Profile

• You have less than three years of backend software engineering experience
• You have limited experience with Python backend frameworks
• You are unfamiliar with Docker or REST API development
• You do not use AI-assisted coding tools in your development workflow
• You are uncomfortable working on task-based freelance contracts
