Overview / Job Description

IO Global is seeking a Software Engineer (Indexer Focus) – Shielded to join the Midnight blockchain team. Midnight is a privacy-focused, regulatory-friendly blockchain platform designed to protect sensitive commercial and personal data while enabling secure decentralized applications.

This role centers on developing and maintaining the Midnight Indexer, a high-performance Rust-based service that streams blockchain data from Midnight nodes to wallets and applications through a GraphQL API. The successful candidate will build scalable data pipelines, optimize database performance, enhance API functionality, and ensure reliable blockchain indexing. Over time, there will also be opportunities to contribute to other platform components, including blockchain nodes, ledger systems, and zero-knowledge proof technologies.

Responsibilities

Indexer Development

• Design, build, and maintain the Midnight Indexer and its core components using Rust.
• Develop and optimize blockchain indexing services for chain, wallet, and SPO (Cardano partner-chain) data.
• Maintain modular, scalable, and maintainable service architecture.

Data Pipeline & Database Management

• Build and maintain data pipelines for processing blockchain blocks and transactions.
• Implement finalized block tracking, gap backfilling, and real-time indexing.
• Design and optimize database schemas using PostgreSQL and SQLite.
• Improve database performance, scalability, and query efficiency.

API Development

• Design and enhance GraphQL APIs, including queries, mutations, and real-time WebSocket subscriptions.
• Ensure secure wallet integration and correct handling of shielded blockchain data.
• Improve API performance and maintainability.

Software Quality & Operations

• Develop unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
• Maintain high standards for software reliability, correctness, and code quality.
• Support containerized deployments using Docker.
• Monitor system performance, observability, and incident response.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions.
• Collaborate with blockchain node, ledger, wallet, and security engineering teams.
• Stay up to date with developments in Rust and blockchain technologies.
• Contribute to adjacent platform components as expertise grows.

Requirements

Experience

• Minimum 3 years of software development experience.
• At least 2 years of professional Rust programming experience.
• Experience building and maintaining high-performance backend systems.
• Experience developing production-grade data pipelines or distributed systems.
• Experience working in remote, distributed teams.
• Experience working in startup or scale-up environments.
• Blockchain development experience is preferred.

• Experience compiling Rust applications to WebAssembly (WASM).
• Familiarity with Cardano or partner-chain ecosystems.
